Wicca

Wicca is a religion found in several countries in the whole world. It was popularized the first time in 1954 by a reprocessed British civil servant called Gerald Gardner. It claimed that the religion, of which he was an initiate, was a modern survival of an old religion of sorcery, which had existed in the secrecy for hundreds of years, coming from the paganism of pre-Christian of Europe. Wicca indicated thus sometimes under the name of the old religion. The veracity of the complaints of Gardner cannot be independently proven, and it it is thought that the theology of Wiccan started to be compiled not earlier than the Twenties. The various relative traditions of Wiccan since evolved/moved or adapted form established by Gardner, who came to be called Gardnerian Wicca. These other traditions of Wicca each one have the belief, the ritual one, and the practices distinctive. Many traditions of Wicca remain held and require that members be initiated. There is also an eclectic movement of Wiccans which does not believe that any doctrines or traditional release are necessary in order to practise Wicca. The American religious investigation of the identification 2001 estimated that at least 134.000 adults were identified like Wiccans in the United States.

Since there is no organization centralized in Wicca, and any “orthodoxy”, the belief and the practices of Wiccans can change appreciably, between the individuals and the traditions. Typically, the principal religious principles, the ritual ethics and structures are shared, since they are the principal elements of the traditional lesson and the work published on the subject. In the traditional forms of Wicca there is a religious text of core known under the name of book of the shades, whose contents are maintained secret of no matter whom but under the name of members of the line. However, several versions proposed of the book were published. Sections of these published versions, such as Wiccan Rede and the load of the goddess, as well as of other writings published about Wicca, were adopted by not-lance which wished to practise the religion. As practised by Gerald Gardner and his disciples, Wicca was and is a reserved and exclusive company of religious sorcery, with the entry at the company only gained by release by another Wiccan. However since the Sixties other, the people not-impetuses adopted the term “Wicca” to describe their belief and the practices, which change those of traditional, lineaged Wicca until larger or with little degree. Wiccans without line with Gardner can be considered a subset of eclectic Wiccans, “which is liberal in their practices, according to the technique to employ all that functions anywhere it came from. ” Eclectic Wiccans exceed in a number maintaining lineaged Wiccans significantly, and their belief and practical tend to being changed much. As practised by the British traditional initiates, Wicca is a variety of sorcery based on religious and magic concepts, and the majority of its members identify like witch. As such it is distinguished not only by its religious belief, but by its preliminary system, structure of organization, secrecy, and practical of magic. Traditional Wiccans British step generally proselytise, and can even refuse adhesion with some individuals, since once initiated a person a priest or a priestess is considered and is designed to develop the qualifications and the responsibility that that requires. Wicca is only one variety of pagan sorcery, with the specific belief and practices. The members of the preliminary groups of Wiccan adore a goddess and a god; they observe the festivals of the eight Sabbaths of the year and the Esbats full-moon, by using the distinctive ritual forms; and they try to live beside a code of ethics. Other forms of sorcery can also adopt some elements religious, moral or ritual specific similar. In the eclectic movement of Wiccan there are much more variation of religious belief, and play of structure of secrecy and organization a less important role. Generally, eclectic Wiccans will adopt the ritual structures similar and the moral principles to traditional Wiccans. Some eclectic Wiccans neither are considered of the witches nor magic of practice. Much Wiccans, although not all, are called the pagan ones, although the paganism of limit of umbrella surrounds much of times which do not have anything to make with Wicca or sorcery.

For the majority of Wiccans, Wicca is a religion duotheistic. The goddess and God are seen while complementary polarities and this balance is seen in kind. They are symbolised sometimes like sun and the moon, and of her lunar associations the goddess becomes a triple goddess with aspects of “young lady”, “mother” and “woman”. A certain catch of Wiccans the goddess to being dominating, since it contains and conceives all. God is the spark of the life and the inspiration at it, simultaneously his in love and his child. This is reflected in the traditional structure of the coven. In some traditions, in particular feminist branches of Dianic Wicca, the goddess is seen like complete with itself, and God is not adored a whole. Wicca is primarily a religion immanente, and for certain Wiccans, this idea also implies elements of animism. A principal belief in Wicca is that the gods can appear in personal form, in a more important way by the bodies of the priestesses and the priests. The last kind of demonstration is the goal of the ritual of the fall the moon (or the fall sun), by which the goddess invites herself to go down in the body from the priestess (or God in the priest) to carry out the divine possession. According to Gardner, the gods of Wicca are the ancient gods of British Isles: God with horns and a large goddess of mother. Gardner also declares that a being higher than unspecified among these tribal gods is identified by the witches like engine, but remains unknowable. Certain Wiccans have a belief monotheistic in the goddess as a one. Many has a design duotheistic deity as a goddess (of the moon, ground and sea) and a God (of forest, hunting and animal kingdom). This concept is often prolonged in a kind of polytheism by the belief that the gods and the goddesses of all the cultures are aspects of this pair (or only of the goddess). Others hold the various gods and goddesses for for separate and distinct. Still of others do not believe in gods as true personalities, but see them like prototypes or thoughtforms. A unified supreme divinity is also recognized by some groups. Patricia Crowther called Dryghten. Janet Farrar and bones of Gavin observed that Wicca becomes polytheistic while it matures, and embraces a more traditional pagan worldview.

The traditional elements are a principal device of the worldview of Wiccan. Each force or forms proclamation is seen to express one of the four archetypal elements - ground, air, fire and water - or of several in association. Some add a fifth or quintessenciel element, spirit (aether of aka, akasha). The five points of frequently symbolizes carried pentagram, inter alia, the four elements with the spirit governing the top. In the frame of a magic circle, the four cardinal elements are visualized like contributing their influence of the four cardinal directions.

The morality of Wiccan is mainly based on Wiccan (often badly included/understood) Rede: It badly no, do what the ye. This is usually interpreted like declaration of freedom to act, with the need for taking the responsability for what follows actions to one. Another element of the morality of Wiccan comes from the law of the triple return, it is understood that who means that no matter what one makes with another person or thing (benevolent or differently) turns over with the triple force. Much Wiccans also seeks to cultivate a whole of eight virtues mentioned in load of Doreen Valiente of the goddess, those which are gaiety, veneration, honor, humility, force, beauty, power and compassion. In poetry of Valiente, they are ordered in the complementary pairs of opposúx, reflecting a dualism which is common in all the philosophy of Wiccan. Some lineaged Wiccans also note a whole of 161 laws, generally called Ardanes. Valiente, original priestesses of Gardner high, noted that these rules were most probably invented by Gardner himself in the scoff-antiquated language like the by-product of the interior conflict in the wood of Bricket of Gerald Gardner coven. Although Gardner has at the beginning shown an aversion with homosexuality, claiming that it reduced “the curse of the goddess”, one now accepts it in many traditions of Wicca.

Some experts of lineaged preliminary Wicca consider that the term “Wicca” applies correctly only to one initiate of a traditional branch of the religion because eclectic Wicca is different in practice from the religion established by Gardner. However, the limit came more and more to be adopted by the people who are not initiates of traditional a lineaged coven. Eclectic Wiccans can undertake the ritual one of individual-attachment, and only generally works as solitary experts or in the occasional groups, rather than in the organized covens. Thus eclectic Wicca shares part of the basic religious principles, ethics and ritual system of traditional, lineaged Wicca, but not the structure of organization, or the belief which the release of Wiccan requires a transferral power of an initiator. Consequently, some lineaged Wiccans adopted the term “British traditional Wicca” to differ from this movement. In the traditional forms of Wicca there are three degrees of release. The first degree is required to go well to a witch and the adhesion of profit of A coven; those which aspire to teach can undergo thereafter in the second place and the third releases of degree, conferring the title of the “high priest” or “high the new priestess” and enabling them to establish covens. With release, certain Wiccans adopt a name of trade with symbolizes their spiritual “rebirth”, to act as changing me magic, or to simply provide anonymity while appearing as a witch as a public.

Lineaged Wicca is organized in covens initiated priests and priestesses. Covens are autonomous, and are generally directed by a high priest and a high priestess working in association, being a couple who have each one be by their first, second and third degrees of release. From time to time the chiefs of A coven are only the initiates of second degree, in this case they belong to the rule of the relative coven. The release and the formation of the new priesthood generally are carried out in A coven the environment, but it is not a need, and ones launched Wiccans are unaffiliated with coven. On the other hand, eclectic Wiccans are generally the solitary experts. Some of these “solitaries”, however, attend with gatherings and other events of the community, but hold their practices as regards hymn (Sabbaths, Esbats, spell-frame, worship, magic work, etc) for when they are alone. A generally quoted tradition of Wiccan supports that the ideal number members for A coven is thirteen, although this is not held like rule hard-and-rapid. Indeed, much of covens of the United States are much smaller, although adhesion can be increased close unaffiliated Wiccans with “open” the ritual one. When the covens develop beyond their ideal number members, they often cross (or “hive”) in covens multiple, however remain connected as a group. To group multiple covens is known like plantation in many traditions. Release in A coven is traditionally preceded by one period by waiting at least by a year and one day. A course of study can be placed for this period. In some covens a ceremony of “attachment” can be carried out for this period, a certain hour before release itself, making it possible the person to attend certain ritual on a basis of probation. Certain solitary Wiccans also choose to study for one year and a day before their individual-attachment with the religion. In typical rites, coven meets inside ritually cast iron and of a purified magic circle. The prayers with God and the goddess are said, the “guards” of north, south, is and the west is well accomodated, and orthography is sometimes worked. A furnace bridge is usually present in circle, on which tools ritual are placed. Before writing the circle, some traditions quickly for the day, and/or bathe ritually. After a ritual finished, God, the goddess and the guards are thanked and it circle is closed. With sensationalised the aspect of Wicca, in particular in Gardnerian Wicca, is the traditional practice to work in nudity, also known under the name of skyclad. This practice apparently drift of a line in Aradia but can be honoured more in the infringement than the observance. The operation of Skyclad is most of the time the preliminary province of Wiccans, which is exceeded in a number per less strictly observant Eclectics. When they function vêtu, Wiccans can wear evening gowns, cords, “Rebirth-make it” - to type the clothing or normal clothing of street. Much use of Wiccans a special unit of magic tools in their ritual. Those can include a brush (brush), the cauldron, the chalice, the magic wand, the book of the shades, the fabric of furnace bridge, the athame (a knife used in the ritual one to dig drains energy), the boline (a knife for things of cutting in the physical world), the candles, the crystals, the pentagram and/or the incense. Representations of Dieu/de goddess are often shown. The tools themselves are right that - tools - and do not have any innate power the their clean ones, although they are usually devoted or responsible for a particular goal, and used only in this context. For this reason, one regards it as coarse touch the tools of another person without permission.

The mark of Wiccans typically each full moon (and in certain boxes new let us moons) with has ritual called Esbat. Principal They also celebrate eight called holidays Sabbaths. Furnace of to lath, the days of cross-country race-quarter, are greater festivals, coinciding with old Celtic festivals of fire. They are Samhain, day before of Beltane gold May, Imbolc and Lammas (gold Lughnasadh). The furnace few festivals are the summer solstice (gold Litha) and winter solstice (gold Yule), and vernal equinoxes and autumn, sometimes called Ostara and Mabon. The names of thesis holidays are often taken pagan and Celtic holidays polytheistic Germanic. However, the festivals are not reconstructive in kind NOR they often resemble to their historical counterparts, instead of that exhibant has form universalism. The ritual observations can show the cultural influence of the holidays desoù they take their name as well as the influence of other independent cultures. Marriages of Wiccan are generally called the “handfastings”. Certain Wiccans observe the practice of a marriage of test for one year and a day, that the catch of some traditions should be contracted on Lammas (Lughnasadh), as this was the traditional moment for the test, of the “marriages of Telltown” among the Irishman. Some carry out a ritual called Wiccaning, similar to a baptème for an infant, the goal of which is to introduce the infant at God and the goddess for protection. In spite of this, according to the importance put on the free will in Wicca, the child necessarily is not envisaged or is not required to follow a pagan way they not to wish to make thus when they age.

The history of Wicca is discussed much. Gardner claimed that the religion was a survival of the pagan religions matriarchal of prehistoric Europe, taught with him by members of the new Coven forest; their rites were fragmentary, and it had them appreciably récrits. It was posed in theory by the authors such as the grief stem of drive of Aidan and the king of Francis X. that Gardner invented the rites in their entirety, incorporating elements of the thesis of Dr. Margaret Murray, incantations of Aradia [23] and practices of ceremonious magic. Heselton concludes that while Gardner could have been erroneous about the ancient origins of the religion, its reports/ratios about it were mainly submitted in good faith. The account of Gardner is as follows: After the withdrawal to risk around the sphere, Gardner met the new forest coven. Later fearing that the trade dies out, it worked on its sorcery of book today, releasing it in 1954, followed significance of sorcery in 1959. It is of these books that much modern Wicca is derived. Many the rites and the precepts of Gardner can be shown to have come from the writings of the occultists earlier and other existing sources, and the original material remainder is uncohesive and takes most of the time the form of substitutions or expansions in the material of unoriginal. Roger Dearnaley describes it like patchwork. Some, such as Isaac Bonewits, of the points discussed this obviousness of Valiente and Heselton at a beginning of the 20th Gardner anteriority of rebirth of century, rather than an old intact pagan religion. This argument moves to some of the historical complaints of Gardner which in conformity with the purse of this period but are contradicted the posterior purse. Written Bonewits, “some share between 1920 and 1925 in England some folklorists seem owe as well as a certain paddle of gold Rosicrucians and some Fam-Traditional supposed to produce the modern first covens in England; to seize eclectically any source they could find in order to test and rebuild the shards of their pagan afterwards. ” The idea of a supreme goddess of mother was common in literature victorienne and of Edwardian: the concept of God with horns - particularly related to the gods to filter or Faunus - was less common, but still significant. All the two ideas were largely accepted in the literature of academic and the popular pressure then.
