Witch's Broomstick - Flying Witches

The witch's broomstick and witches flying about the countryside.

Brooms have been connected a long time to sorcery, almost universally depicts like round brooms of medieval-model and been dependent on the female witches. In spite of association with women, in 1453, the first known case to claim to have flown on a handle with broom is recorded, admitted by the male witch Guillaume Edelin. There is, however, the former discs of the witches flying on the similar sticks or objects, usually which had been lubricated the first time with a magic ointment of flight.

The broom achieved another goal for periods of persecution. The witches and other magic experts would disguise their magic wands like broomsticks to avoid the suspicion. It is also a tradition which brooms were used by certain like receptacles to lodge a particular spirit temporarily.

Today the broom is included in the lists of tools ritual in much of pagan guides, where it often indicated under the name of a broom. A broom is sometimes extended to the opening of the rossets of some covens. Representing the element of air, brooms are used in the purification of the sectors. They are employed to sweep the clean circles ritual of negative energy. The high priestess or the high priest walks clockwise, traces the cast iron circle and sweeps with the broom a few inches in addition to ground. This practice can be employed in more or instead of the incense to purify a ritual space. It is often used by those allergic to exasperate, and during the ritual one practised in sectors of smoke freely. It is also a technique related to the “kitchen witches” which it use what is in hand to work orthography.

The brooms of broom are the broom traditionally related to the witches and are traditionally made broomwood attached to a larger post. Consequently, the broom is rounded instead of the apartment. The bits can be made of many materials including, but not to be limited to the straw, grasses, or the broomwood. Supposedly, an ascending acute broom, particularly finished or approach a door, will help to protect the house counters bad spirits or negative energies. A broom is one of the tools used in Wicca. A traditional broom of Wiccan is a handle of bar of ash with bits made starting from the broomwood of birch. This broomwood is attached on employing the mean pieces of wood of willow. It is employed to clean the ritual sector before the frame of circle. To clean your ritual sector, the beginning with the center and the mobile deosil clockwise sweep the circle of the center at the external edges, with all envisagement moment and with the song which negativity is swept outside and the circle is purified. The broom is usually regarded as male due in kind to its phallic form and symbolism. However the components of the broom are of male and female orientation. The handle, a bar of ash, is male in kind while the birch used for the bits is regarded as female in kind. The broom is a great part of ceremonies handfasting of Wiccan in some traditions. The couple jumps over the broom during the ceremony. Alternatively, the couples can jump over a small fire.

The use of the broom as tool in sorcery could have started when there were much fear and hatred towards witches. A handle with broom was a common article of household and could not thus be employed as obviousness that a person was a witch. Today, Wiccans which is always “in the cabinet of broom” could employ a similar excuse to avoid the suspicion.

Current theory about the origins of the witches and the flight with their brooms is based in a ritual implying a psychoactive voyage of drug. The witches would apply an ointment of flight to facilitate them in their voyage. There are many receipts for this ointment all which have a base of belladonna of atrope or officinarum of Mandragora, all two strongly psychoactive drugs producing visions and encouraging astral projection. The ointment was rubbed everywhere the body using the broom with a personal account given by a witch who described the act to rub the ointment on it the hands and the feet which gave a feeling of the flight.

The handles with broom assembled by witch and would jump around the fields, coatings of the ointment of flight, with “teach” high harvests how to develop. The ointment would give them imaginary “voyages thus” they thought that they flew of the distances.

One of the most common attributes of the marked witches was their capacity supposed to fly of long distances. Although even Kramer and Sprenger admitted in Malleus Maleficarum that some witches imagine only they deal with the Sabbath, they required that much witch really be transported physically. Nevertheless, to equalize a witch who dealt with Sabbath only in her imagination “sees what as surely takes place as that whose body is transported”.

Ironically, an older document called Canon Episcopi declares that people who believe that the witches can fly by the night are heretics:

Some bad women, perverted by the devil, allured by the illusions and the phantasms of the demons believed and profess themselves, in the hours of the night to go up on certain animals with Diana, the goddess of pagan, and an innumerable multitude women, and in the silence of died of the night to cross great spaces of the ground and to obey it of the orders in date of their mistress and to be destined for its service certain nights. One 12th area of century of unknown occupation of author reads pareillement: “Certain women, converted into Satan, believe and admit that in the hours of night they assemble with Diana the goddess of pagan or with Herodias and Minerva and an innumerable train of the women, and obeys their orders. But you are crassly stupid to believe that these acts, which are imaginative, really occur”.

It was not until the fifteenth century that Canon Episcopi was reversed. Maintaining it was an offence heretic to deny of the witches could be transported in the body and the spirit.

In the past the reality of the voyage had been established, it became possible to question each allowed witch about the other people which was with the Sabbath. Torture applied in the current circumstances guaranteed that a reaction of selector would take place. As in avançés model atomic furnaces, each burned witch automatically carried out the candidates two or additional for the burn. To help the system to function without jolt, there were additional improvements. Expenditure was reduced by forcing the family of the witch to pay the invoice the services of of torture and of the torturers. The family was also posted at the cost of the faggots and the banquet which the judges held after the burn. Considerable enthusiasm for witch-drives out could be accumulated among the local civils servant, since they were authorized to confiscate the whole field of any person condemned for sorcery. The feelings of paranoia fed the witches of belief could fly.

Witnesses more often proved to make charges of the fast or invisible movement. The witch would be seen while they left the place of onle, only to indicate several miles far without passing them on the road. A dependent belief was that the witches knew far too about the businesses from others, bringing back secrecies which they could not have known or conversations to surprise far from with far. Nevertheless, in England, to fly was a rare confession of the witches. The acts of sorcery of “proscribed many practices as regards sorcery but did not prohibit them to fly”.

Although the majority of the marked witches seem to have admitted to fly only because being tortured, certain seem to have really believed that they flew. Considerably changed means of transport. These means include:

On the backs of the magic human beings “which waited in a fright with the hang-post to their mistresses were ready to return”
On brooms, sticks, forks, posts, or shovels
On the air goats, the older witch could go up on its back while “its family perilous were balanced on a pin exceeding of the anus of the animal”
On the heads of the strange animals
While transforming itself into owls, cats, or bats
By means of one unguent or of an ointment given to them by the devil.

A certain number of written accounts exist which speak about the use of the unguents and of the ointments which make it possible a witch to fly.

They include: "The book of the crowned magic of Abremelin the Mage', by Abremelin the Mage, and “De Miraculis Rerum Naturalium”, by Giovanni Battista. In the account of Abraham the Mage, it is provided one unguent by a young witch who after friction on the principal impulses of the feet and the hands, created a feeling of the flight. The account of Carried has a section which is authorized “Laiarum Unguenta”, of the “Unguents witches”, in that it describes the receipt of the ointments of flight.

Of the European witches were generally associated the use of the ointments, of oils, and the magic ointments. The alleged witches oindraient themselves with these unguents, sometimes known under the name of green ointments or green oils, before the catch with the air on their handles with broom. An English witch of ten-seventh-century admitted that “before they are carried to their meetings, they oignent their faces and their Hand-wrists with Oyl the spirit brings them”. Other English witches said that greenish oil was applied with a feather to the face. Some were supposed to apply unguent it with their armpits.

In the case of the kettle of Alice, an Irish witch of the 14th century, it “lubricated one constructs in staff, on which it overlapped and gallopped the complete thicke and thins”. A source of fifteenth-century reads, “they oignent a personnel and go up on top… or are oignent under the arms and in other hairy places”. And in another source, we note that of the “witches, the male and the female, which have the pact with the devil, oignant with some unguents and exhibitor certain words are carried per night with the distant grounds”.

A refined ointment is described in Errores Gazariorum:

To take a man red-of a hair known to be a good catholic, to remove his clothing, to downwards attach it on one to put except play so that it cannot move, and to leave the poisonous animals then loosen on him. When it expired their bites and punctures, to hang the body with back and to place a basin under its head and stop. To leave distillations falling from the body to be caught in the basin. To mix the latter with grease of a hung man, entrails of the children, and bodies of the toxic creatures which had been employed to carry out the transfer of the victim. The uses of the ointments and the powders thus obtained are much. While coating them on sticks or brooms, one makes these objects able of the bearing one in top, or one oint his own body at the same end. A coal of French wood-burner supposedly learned that his wife went to a Sabbath, and wished to go as well. One night, it A pretends slepping while his wife rubbed with an ointment. It then disappeared to the top of the chimney. It is oint pareillement and was carried to far at the cellar from an old manor. There it found his wife with the assembled Sabbath. “His wife immediately made a secret sign, and any company disappeared. The coal of wood-burner was left only in the depths of the cellar, where it was found by the people of the house, which took it for a robber. It had the greatest difficulty while leaving a blow of very bad scraper”. The ointment of flight of the witches Basques according to the information obtained by torturing one of them, Maria d' Ituren implied to peel alive clamping plates and to mix the dry flesh and out of powder with usainbelar plantain of water.
