Sex magic, or sexual magic, is a term applied to various types sexual activity practiced in magical, theurgical, or other religious and/or spiritual pursuits.
Sex magic is based on the concept or belief that sexual energy, power, drive, force, or libido of a living organism is the most potent force it contains and that by harnessing the unique psychosomatic states that arise through sexual activity, a special, experiential conduit for the transcendence of nominal reality can be realized.
Two of the fundamental applications of sexual magic concern the use or experience of the orgasm. Some practitioners base their use of sex magic and its rituals on the power that ejaculation contains. Others believe the orgasm to be the antithesis of their pursuit, and that sex magic should be instead, a transmuting of the sexual energy into higher forms of creative and spiritual energy rather than expelling it through ejaculation.
For example, sex magic in the Great Rite of Wicca, involves a ritual that employs either symbolic or actual sexual intercourse between the High Priestess and the High Priest. The ritual and its act represents the union between the Maiden Goddess and the Lover God, whereas in the sexual acts of tantric Buddhism any ejaculation is prohibited.
