The Major Arcana
The standard tarot deck consists
of 78 cards divided into two sections, the major and minor
arcana. Secrets of the word is the plural of arcanum which
means "big secret".
To the alchemists of the Middle Ages, the arcanum was the
secret of nature. Tarot cards, therefore a collection of
"secrets" that underlie and explain our universe.
The 22 major Arcana cards are the heart of the platform. Each of these cards symbolizes some universal aspect of human experience. They represent the archetypes - consistent, the direction of the patterns of influence that are an inherent part of human nature.
Each Major Arcana card has a name and number. Some names convey the meaning of a card directly, as the Force, Justice and Temperance. Other letters are people who represent a particular approach to life, as the magician or the hermit. There are also cards with astronomical names, such as star, the sun and moon. They represent the forces associated with such elusive celestial bodies.
The major arcana are special because they lead to deep and complex reactions. Images from the Rider-Waite recall because they combine with recognizable figures esoteric symbolism and situations. The symbolism is subtle, but effective.
A major arcana card is always given extra weight in a reading. When one of these cards is, you know what is at stake are not trivial or temporary. The Fool's journey seems to move smoothly from an order of experience to the next, but our learning adventures are not as orderly. We make mistakes, ignore the lessons and not realize our potential. Sometimes we lack the courage and vision to discover our deepest levels. Some do not feel the call of the Hermit look inside, or never experience a crisis that could free them from Tower ego defenses.
We often try to overcome our difficulties, but on several occasions. The lesson of the Hanged Man - to let go and surrender to the experience - is particularly difficult and may need to address again before they are fully incorporated.
Classes often feel out of order. A person can absorb the qualities of resistance in early life due to a difficult childhood, but only after developing the domain and control of the car. Anyone can overcome the temptation of materialism of the devil through a life of seclusion, but to learn about relationships and sexuality - a lesson for all the lovers - at a later time.
The Major Arcana contains many levels and types of expertise. These cards have all the patterns of growth, if it occurs within a segment of a life or a life. We might even say that life is really just an episode of growth in the great saga of evolution of our soul.
No matter what our level of self-discovery, the commander tells us that the fullness and satisfaction are our destiny. If we keep this promise as our guiding star, we can realize our true nature and gain the world.
